Chapter 5 – Diversity Recruiting

Diversity Recruiting – Diversity Recruiting goes way beyond ethnicity and gender. Are your teams maximizing the unemployed and underemployed populations who may not respond to traditional mass market advertising? Veterans and their Spouses, Entry Level, Retiree and Disability Hiring initiatives are all ways to increase the candidate pool while strengthening the diversity of your team and company. There are many organizations that will help you with your efforts if they see a commitment to hiring these populations.  They can provide free publicity, training, job consultation and other services that are unique to their organizations.  Since many companies do not effectively engage them, this is a way to win the war for talent.

Does your company monitor your minority hiring? How often, and at what level in the organization?

Are there attraction and development plans to meet the needs of different populations?

Rate your company’s effectiveness in attracting and keeping candidates in the following populations, with ten being the highest and one being the lowest:

·        Veterans and spouses

·        High school internships

·        College internships

·        People with varying abilities

·        Retirees or soon to be retired

·        Under-represented minorities

·        College students with extended debt

·        Minority professional organization members

·        HBCU students and alumni

Have your leaders do the same and compare answers. What did you find?

What efforts are you making towards maximizing the identification of great talent and suitable positions within these populations?
